Old Wooden Playhouse Coop Conversion in Progress- Picture Heavy and more to come!

We got the nest boxes built today, but since we could only work while the kiddo was napping, we didn't get them installed. Maybe that'll happen after it cools off this evening... It involves adding studs and cutting a hole in the siding where they will be fastened to the outside of the coop, so it's a project in itself!

It looks a little wonky from this angle, but it's mostly square. Each box is 12" Wide x 14" Deep and the dividers are 12" High though the slant of the lid makes them 12" at the smallest part up to 24" at the tallest part. We will cut one large opening to give access to all four boxes. We have 12 hens, so we figured 4 boxes was plenty. We actually got some free 2x4s that were previously used in a roof, and so they were cut at an angle on the ends, and this worked out perfectly and we didn't have to cut any angles! I hate cutting angles... The lid is an old cabinet door I found on the side of the road a couple weeks ago. We built the measurements of the box around this lid so it would fit.

Thanks! Are you talking about the window for the chicken door? It's actually an old glass cabinet door. :)
Where in the PNW are you? We're in Portland.
We are in LO and funny enough, we are also the Brown Family. Hey cous! I Craigslist everything as well. Here is one of my two Craigslist coops..

Hauled this sucker clear from Washington using movers! Can't wait to see your finished coop.

I actually sat here for ten minutes trying to think of what "LO" was. Haha! Then it hit me. Oh! Lake Oswego! We actually went there for the first time to get this playhouse! I thought it was a cute little area, I really loved the lake town feel! And I am finding out that there are LOTS of Brown Families. Haha! My maiden name is really uncommon, so it's so funny to me that I now have a super common last name. I meet Brown's all the time and think "Heyyyyyy!" Haha!

I love your coop! It's so cute! I would have moved it from WA too! I was amazed when I moved here (originally from a smaller town in AZ) how great Craigslist was. in AZ, it's really hit or miss, and I almost never used it. But here, it seems everyone is constantly giving things away or selling them on there! I try to get most things second hand, mostly because it's cheaper, but also because there is enough used but still great hings floating around, what is the point in spending five times as much to get the same thing new? Haha!

Have you been to the Rebuilding Center at all? It's in the Mississippi District of PDX, and it's AWESOME!

Oh yes, we love all the salvage/rejuvination/reclaimed shops. So fun to get a cup of coffee and poke around them on a lazy weekend. Here's another I'm heading to this weekend..

A bit of a drive out of town, but there are a lot of nice roadside fruit stands to hit along the way..Sorry to hack your coop thread.

Ohhhh, I might have to go there this week! Looks neat! I just love those kinds of stores, but I find that a lot of them want way too much money for salvaged items... I love the rebuilding center though, thier prices are generally (in my experience) fair or cheap. :) If you go before I do, let me know how you liked it!

Will do! If you like poking around crazy places, have you ever been to City Liquidators? That's a fun way to kill a morning too. OK, back to the coop progress. Keep the pictures coming! I want an old window greenhouse one day too.

I went to the PDX Liquidators up near Cascade Station a couple months ago, and was not impressed.. It was like a really big dollar store(crappy stuff) but everything was more than $1. Haha! But I recently saw City Liquidators down under the Hawthorne(I think?) Bridge near the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and have been meaning to pop and and see what that place is like. I love crazy places full of random stuff.. You find the best stuff there! I guess that is why I like craigslist so much, people have the strangest stuff! We're (my husband and I) really eclectic types, so that kind of thing appeals to us. It's definitely not for everyone though. My mother thinks I am insane for getting things used. Haha! But she's super fancy....

Us formerly-interesting-named-now-Brown people are just like that..you can take the crazy out of the last name, but...

Once I get my greenhouse built (which is the next project after the coop since I'd like to have it ready to start seeds in January or so) if I have any windows left over, I'll be sure to let you know., I'm pretty sure I have WAY too many. Haha!

KILLER build. . . It is so well thought out! Thanks for the comments on my thread and the link here. . . so great ideas!

Thanks!
Crazy Mitch!
