Older Chicken

I found my oldest chicken (6 y.o. Americana) this afternoon breathing noisily thru her open mouth sitting in the poop box. Every now & then she'll shake like she's fluffing her feathers & she 'screams' for lack of better word. Then she continues breathing noisily. She's not lethargic but doesn't act like she'll take water when offered. There's also a very "active" roo in with the 9 hens who don't always like his advances. In fact, some run & hide!
Just asking, does this sound like a respiratory issue or possibly a bully roo issue? Could he have hurt her?

Can be ether of the 2. If it is a respiratory issue,, it can be contagious.
To be safe,, I would separate from flock, until ether cured/healed, or chicken crosses the rainbow bridge.
You also did not mention ambient temperature. No location in your profile,,, So i cant guess your area temps.
Some of my hens have been acting similar with heavy breathing, due to HOT weather here. When heat passes, in the eve, the breathing returns to normal.
A long while ago, one of my chickens, did develop a respiratory disease. Maybe it was cholera?? not sure. 2 other chickens quickly got it as well. The ending was something not pretty.
I'm glad I didn't loose all my flock.

Thank you for your reply. We are in the northwest and not hot at all until today if you call 84 hot! This wasn't just a hot chicken(have seen those before). We did seperate her as soon as we found her. After about 6 hrs she was actually worse so we helped her cross
Rainbow Bridge so she wouldn't suffer. I won't let my animals suffer. I'll be watching the others for any signs. This roo is beautiful but his looks are helping him find a new harem to chase!

Sorry for your loss but you did the right thing, it’s the worst thing to see a pet suffer. I applaud your principles but feel your loss.
