This older hen recenly had some foot problems, slight limp, which appeared to be a nail/toe problem with a small open wound. I treated her for 1 week with soaks, ointments, and wraps and she was better until yesterday. Now she is hopping on one foot. Her shank is discolored. What does this look like and how shall I treat it. Thanks for your help.

That could be a cut or even a compound fracture. I would clean the wound with chlorhexidene (Hibiclens in drug stores) or betadine, then apply plain antibiotic ointment. Do younfeel any displacement of the bone? You may want to limit her activity in a dog crate with food and water to help her heal. Keep the crate with other chickens for company.

Thank you. It doesn't appear displaced but I wondered if it was bruising from an injury vs an infection. The discoloration is on all sides, and over the length of most of the leg. Most noticable at the top.
