Older hens?

I just bought 2 RIR Hens. They are about 1yr old. I have a question. We have nesting boxes for them, they are not using them. Should we put them in their boxes to train them, or just wait and see if in time they will use them?

Welcome to BYC. They need to get used to their surroundings and they'll eventually lay. Try putting a golf ball or two in the nest boxes. Once they see them, they should know where to lay their eggs.

Yes, they do need time to adjust to their new digs. They may be laying outside somewhere, so it is best to put fake eggs in the boxes and keep them confined in the morning when they are most likely to lay to help train them to use the boxes. And seeing the fake eggs will help them to be comfortable, thinking another hen has laid her egg there.

Thanks for the welcome we just got them yesterday, no eggs. I'm sure because of the stress in the move to a new coop. We are using wooded nesting boxes, almost like Tractor Supply sell.

Yes, if you got them yesterday, it can take them a couple weeks to settle in. They may stop laying for a couple weeks as well due to the stress. Keep them quiet, don't handle them much for a week or so. And move slowly around them. Give them time and offer them up some goodies. Sit down on their level on the ground so they are not afraid and offer treats. This will help them bond to you and build trust. Hopefully they quiet down soon and get on with the laying!
