Older Pet Chicken -Ascites

Hello.
I have looked through the forum threads, and am overwhelmed by the different suggestions, so thought I'd try with a new thread.
I have a question about Baytrel 10% oral solution. My pet chicken, Gabrielle, is 8 years old, no longer lays, has never been ill, and is the matriarch of a tiny flock of 3. She is currently very ill with ascites. I also suspect that she is an internal layer or has a growth of some sort. I have a bottle of liquid Baytrel 10%, and am very confused about the dosage. Can someone please use simple language to explain the dosage I should give to her? I can put it in the water or add to food just for her, as she’s in the coop, but separated from her sisters to keep her safe but in familiar surroundings. Please advise. Thank you so much!

Thanks for checking in on Gabrielle. She’s hanging in there. I think I figured out the proper dosage for Baytril, and have also started her on Milk Thistle. We’re taking it day by day.

so im not sure about about the dosage but i saw you posted that you found the dosage, i used a home made remedy for my hen with water belly and she seems to have made a full recovery, i shared about it here

Thank you so much for taking the time to share and for the link to your article. With the Milk Thistle, Gabrielle’s belly has gone down steadily, and is about 1/3 of what it was last week. It still needs to go down more, so I’ve ordered the products you mentioned and will start her on those ASAP.

Baytril 10% liquid dosage is 0.05 ml per pound twice a day given orally. That would be 0.25 or 1/4 ml for a 5 pound chicken. Give it for 5 days. Most with experience do not put it in water since it tastes very bad, but give it orally directly into the beak.

Ascites does not get better, but can be treated temporarily with draining fluid occasionally to make more comfortable and decrease labored breathing. Draining risks are infection and death. Some causes of ascites are reproductive infections, liver disease, cancer, and heart failure.

Thanks so much! That’s the amount I’ve been giving her. The label said for 7-10 days. It’s the 8th day today, and this will probably be the last day I give it to her. I decided to use milk thistle instead of draining due to the inherent risks, and it seems to be working. She’s doing much better (belly is down about 70%). Not completely back to top form but definitely better enough to maintain her position as flock leader. Thanks again for the dosage. I bookmarked this thread for future use.

what was your milk thistle dosage? And did you give it to all chickens or just those with ascites?
