olive egger pullets? pic heavy

I called the gentleman whom I got these little ladies from. He disagrees and said that the comb is not actually linked genetically to the color of the egg. And that he has layers with straight combs that lay the olive eggs.

Anyway, he is going to exchange one or both for me for some with pea combs. I think I will just do one....some dark brown eggs would help make a pretty egg rainbow for me anyhow. Although, he is still certain that both these straight combed pullets will lay olive eggs.

There is like a .3% chance they could lay an olive egg, legbars have single combs and lay green/blue eggs. But pretty much if it has a pea comb, it will most likely lay an olive or green egg. There is still a chance your new pea combed pullet could lay a brown egg.
I'm guessing they are OE xOE, they first gen chicks should all have pea combs. Single comb is ressesive to all other combs if I remember right, so the first chicks would have pea combs, but carry the single comb gene, so when they are breed together, the single comb pops up again.

There is an olive egger thread in the breeds and genetics section, you could post in there and see what they say :D

He claims these are black copper marans over black ameraucana which would make them 1st gen. I did read that thread. OK, not all of it because it is HUGE!, but I did read a lot of pages! I'm not arguing the information, just relaying what he said. So, now I'm left though wondering if he is either 1. not very knowledgeable, or 2. I'm getting a little swindled. He seems incredibly nice, so I'll go with unknowlegable.

Either way, at this point, I'm not left very confident that I'll have any olive eggs.

I guess I'll have a few months to wait, and then I'll see what happens. Like I said he is exchanging one with a pea combed pullet, so that increases my odds. Eh!

Me too. My breeder seemed extremely confident that I was getting OE's, she has BMC and BlueCM over Wheaten Ameraucanas, but, all of mine save one have single combs. Either they're extremely uninformed on how to make an OE, or some roos aren't doing their jobs! I still have at least 14 weeks until mine start laying, so I've given up on trying to guess what color they'll lay - I was driving myself crazy.

I have hatched a lot of crosses. I have been told that straight comb CAN lay blue or olive eggs.... but it has not happened at my house yet. I had two of the prettiest EE, big beard and muffs and straight comb..... BROWN eggs. I had a pullet with a hybrid comb and she laid a blue green eggs. Now if they have some kinda hybrid comb you chances increase but STRAIGHT combs, I just cull. The trick to Olive Eggers is to use a blue egg layer that has 2 copies and is DOMINATE for the pea comb.

BTW if she lays a dark egg, she is still not a MARANS and should not be breed that way. Once she has been crossed she is not pure anymore and should just be a layer.

What does "2 copies" mean? And how do you know a hen is dominate for the pea comb, other than her having one?

Love all the info I get on here!

All my girls will be layers at this point anyhow so for the most part I don't really care what true breed they are, I am striving more for eye candy....in both the girls themselves and the eggs.

Now, since he has marans roos and marans hens, along with ameraucana hens and roos, (they are supposedly marans over ameraucana and ameraucana over marans, but I'm guessing that can't always be 100% certain) how does it NOT create the green egg? And how would I know if I have a mixed hen or a full marans hen? Someday, I would like to breed, but not until I understand a WHOLE lot more!!!

One copy from mama and one from daddy.... 2 copies. Test mating will tell you.
