Hooray! Olympia, our Australorp and very consistent broody, is finally setting! We hoped she would go broody this year so we could give her some fertile eggs to hatch. (She went broody twice last summer, but we discouraged her as we had no eggs for her to hatch.) She's so funny. She puffs herself up like a screaming black beach ball! It's hilarious to watch. So far we have her sitting on Delaware and Welsummer eggs, both purebred and shipped from people on BYC, I believe. Our Blue Orps should arrive on Tuesday, but we gave her the Delawares and Welsummers anyway because we wanted to make sure they didn't go bad. This is our (and her) first time hatching eggs and we're really excited! I'm joining a poultry division of 4-H and I hope to show the chicks next year.

Here's some pics of Olympia. Pardon her bare belly, she plucked it to increase contact with the eggs.

The funny thing is that now all the other hens want to lay their eggs near her broody-cage inside the coop and some make broody noises. I think it's probably because Lympy is the lead hen.

Okay. She's sitting on her eggs and they should hatch sometime around this Friday! We candled last week; one had a bacterial infection so we took it out and the yolk was all scrambled, not developed at all. But the other ones are developing and squirming around! It's so weird, but cool at the same time. So exciting!
We're candling again tonight; we hope for good results.

Shes beautiful.

What kind of candler do you use? Normally we just use our Ryobi flash light but sine the bulb blew we've had to use a regular flash light. We're not getting very accurate candlings. We hardly ever saw movement before (In eggs that I knew were developing) and now we never see movement.

All these posts about seeing movement and squirming is making me jealous! I have got to get a better candler...
