Description: My husband and I are putting in a chicken coop this fall. We are first time chicken keepers. We are only interested in chickens that are of dual purpose at the moment. Because we live 40 minutes from the market, we want to be able to provide fresh eggs and the occasional meat for the family (of course after the chickens have lived their lives). Our chickens will have an area of approximately 100-200 sqft of run for the first year or so, then after we have the new place done, it will be much more than that. They will be spoiled and taken well care of. We are looking for about 8-10 chickens for the first couple years, and then with more space we can add later.
Discussion: I started this thread to discuss these type of chickens located on the Olympic Peninsula, NW Washington state. Anyone in this area, I would LOVE to hear about your chicken selections, why, and their quality of life. How you keep them safe from predators and how you protect them during our winter months. What chickens have you chosen any why? Any recommendations of types and/or sellers? (we prefer to buy local)
