I have a hen who lays a tan egg that is darker on one end and gets progressively lighter as it moves down. So one end of her eggshell is a tan and the other end is a pale white. Anyone ever heard of this and know what causes this?
From my experience every egg is different, as long as it doesn't seem to affect the internal egg for eating, a colorful egg basket is a fun way to enjoy back yard chickens!
Yes, it is caused by the speed the egg shell passes though the stage that adds the tint. It's not really a problem, and the tint should even out as the bird gets older.
I just had my first ombré egg. I tried to take a picture of the egg but the color difference from one end of the egg to the other didn’t really show up. Two of the girls were ready to lay at the same time and were fussing over the favorite nesting box for close to an hour. There were plenty of other nesting boxes available... Since stress can be a factor, I am going with that explanation for now. If it occurs again I will let you folks know. .
