OMG Cockroaches

Oh, yuck. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse.

Where I live, we have heavy clay soil. Except for two big spots that I dug out and replaced w/ sand and light soil for their dust bathing areas. If they are in there, they are gonners cuz the hens will unearth them during the day and if they see them, they eat them.

If you live in the south like I do, you get use to them. Just picked up two dying roaches this morning. Momma always said, If you keep a dirty house, you have dirty roaches, If you keep a clean house, you have clean roaches.

We just have to keep on top of them all the time.

Here is a quick and cheap trap you can make: clean mayo or large jar, shortening smeared about two inches down around the inside of the rim, we always put banana peels in the bottom of the jar or any other tasty treat. Set it out at night and the next morning you should have several. Just through the jar away or empty and reset for the next night.

I know this is an old thread but taking a chance. Do you leave the jar upright and the roaches climb up and into it? Or lay it on its side and they can't get back out because of the shortening?

I never tried it but I'll bet you leave the jar upright and they can't get back out. They slip off the shortening.

I figured out where mine are hiding. They are hiding under this brick wall so I go out and pull up the bricks and let the chickens get at the ones that scatter off. I figure I'll never get rid of every last one. Because they will just come over from the neighbors. But if I can keep a balance, then I'm good.

I did not get any and I'm actually kind of bummed.

I did spritz the area where they are hanging out w/ DE last week and I wonder if that took it's toll on the little buggers.

I brought the jar in just so it wouldn't bake in the sun and the shortening melt. But I fully plan on putting it back out again tonight until I catch some.

Well, I'm not catching any so either I'm not doing it right or I've got them under control.
I did put out a heavy sprinkling of DE a few weeks back and that could be impacting things.

I've had REALLY good luck in the past with those Roach Motels that you buy. They are nothing more than cardboard boxes w/ really sticky stuff inside and some sort of attractant. I have them in my garage and I get one in there every now and then. Maybe one a month or so.

So I know they exist out in the environment. But few are getting in.

But I like the idea of making your own traps so I'll keep the jars out and refresh with a new banana peel every week or so throughout the summer.
