So you guys have no idea what I'm talking about cause I haven't shared it on BYC, but I'm just so excited I have to share now! I had a chick hatch with a severe hip deformity. I let him crawl around for a week, hoping maybe it would get better in time, but it only got worse. It got to the point where he couldn't move his leg even remotely (I think the nerves were pinched) and it stuck out at a 90 degree angle from his body (at the hip, not the hock). So last week I called my vet and asked if there was anything I could do for him. She said hip deformities/injuries are rarely fixable, but I could try and she told me to splint him a special way (he needed a brace between his legs as well as two hobbles). He couldn't eat on his own because the hobbles stressed him out so he wouldn't focus on food, so I've been force feeding him. Three days of splints made significant improvements, but nothing too great and I was beginning to think he couldn't be saved.

But today, day 6, I cut the splints to make bigger ones and he can use his leg again! It's fairly straight and he can actually stand on it! He's walking! He's far from perfect but I think I can fully fix him now. I'm just so excited that he might make it after all! I decided I would let him use his legs for the first time in 6 days today. His muscles and so weak I thought he might benefit from some exercise. He's just remembered what solid food is and is happily devouring his chick starter. And he's walking and moving his leg. Yay!

wow! That is an incredible story! Amazing.

Do you have pictures of him that you can share?

Congratulations on making such a big improvement. Many would have given up long ago.

Moody, that is AWESOME! I'm hoping you took pics along the way to document his recovery...that would be really neat to see! KUDOS to you for not giving up on him!

I didn't take pictures of the leg at its worst. I should of... but I didn't think of it. Just picture a Picasso painting of a chick... that's what his leg looked like. lol I could get pictures now, but it just looks like a really badly splayed leg now... sometimes it even looks normal.

I'm thinking another week and he should as normal as the other chicks. Then maybe another week after that for his muscling to get up to par. Gosh I'm so happy.

GREAT!!!

Just some words of hope.... We have a chick who had a similar problem, though not as severe. His left leg was turned out at the hip and was angled slightly behind him. He could walk around, but not well. We could clearly feel the deformity (or injury during shipping?) in the hip area. Well, we splinted his legs and left them splinted for about a week or so. When we removed them, he was doing better, but not great. DH and I battled whether to put the brace back on or let his muscles strengthen up for a little while. After another week or so, he was fine! Now he is 7 mos old and we can't tell him apart from the others (literally...we used to ID him based on his down pattern, which is obviously gone). I know your little guy's hip problem is worse than our chicks, but I thought I would share our experience with you to give you even more hope!!

Good luck!!

I'll get pics when she's better. Right now she looks so pittiful cause she hasn't preened her pretty little feathers in a week. She doesn't have a name yet, but she's supposed to be a she cause she's the end result of a sexlinked cross and she came out gold. So I'm assuming "she." I didn't want to name her and get attached in case she didn't make it.

Dr. Smith, she's an avian specialist in Placerville? Darn, I always mix up Placerville and Pilot Hill. Whichever is past Coloma about 45 minutes from Cool. lol
