In a very long time!!!

My 3 day olds are just starting to avoid my hands. They run the other way, even when I offer starter, only the most brave come up. Soooooooooo, I made me some deviled eggs as my treat (only had a few pizza rolls for dinner) and kept one whole egg out for my 8 weekers. Well, I go to my brooder full of 3 day olds, and talk to them, reach in, and they all start screeching and running. So, I go and grab a small chunck of the egg yolk, break it apart and reach in. They all screech and run. Then the brave come out. They start their "chickie language" like mmmmm that tastes good. All of a sudden, I can't see my hand!!! I have 10 "vultures" covering my hand!!! And when 1 gets off with a big chunk, another one does this -run, jump, grab, run- right over everyone elses heads!!!!! Then, another would do it!!! I couldn't keep my hand still for all the laughing I was doing!!! Nothing like 3 day olds flying over the others and grabbing a piece. It's hard to explain, maybe a "you had to be there" thing, but since they really don't fly yet, it was the cutest thing! And my hand being covered by babies, oh, how blessed I am!!! I'm gonna do this every couple of days!

Steph - in "head-over-heels" love with her babies!!!

Its a good thing to get "home chickens" used to your hands and contact early on. They will always be a little flighty, chickens always are. But it helps them to have some level of comfort around you.

I like to hand feed them, too.

Yeah, I've been feeling bad, cuz with my 3 older ones, I have 3 kids, and they would get carried around alot. With 10 new chicks, my kids have their favorites, and the others don't get as much attention. So, Mom winds up holding 7 chicks, and believe me, that ain't easy!! Now I know that even if they don't get the same amount of cuddle time, they will still be used to me.

Oh, anyone know if it is safe for a chick to sleep on it's back? My DD's favorite likes to sleep on her lap on it's back!!! I'm worried it might not be healthy, as I've never seen a chick sleep like that. thanks! Steph

I had a mystery chick that regularly slept on its back, but acted normal otherwise. Now it is a perfectly normal sleeping, content little japanese bantam roo, so I don't think there is necessarily anything wrong with a chicken that sleeps on its back.

My chickies love to eat from my hand - here's a pic:

However, now that they are nearly 3 weeks old it doesn't tickle as much...they have sturdy, pointy little beaks!

We set our brooder outside in the sun for the first time yesterday, and one of the chicks kept lying down on her side, stretching out, basking in the sunlight. I'd never seen a chicken do this before! They really are entertaining...better than TV. I dropped a few purple clover flowers in the brooder yesterday, and watching them play keep-away was hilarious.
