I just remembered this burning question:

I was outside messing with the quail, checking the females heads to make sure they were healing and I heard this thing GASP at me!

It sounded like a HUGE intake of breath by a really big person, but came from the quail. What the heck was it? I actually jumped back when it happened!

On a side note, is it common for the coturnix males to attack your hands?

My females attack me more than the males do, usually when I'm feeding them

Darned pigs think they'll starve if they don't get food RIGHT NOW!!

As for the gasping thing, idk, I haven't heard mine do that?

i had one male who attacked my hands every time i put them in his cage. i started grabbing him and holding him for a couple seconds when he would attack me and in just a couple days he stoped.

omg..... mine did the same thing to me last week i was just walking past the cage and it gasped at me!

Haven't had the GASP thing happen yet! Now sometimes when the males crow it makes me jump a bit. I do have a golden hen who pecks at my rings and comes right over to the side of the cage as soon as I walk in the barn. And most of the rest of them will get curious if I stick my hand in the pen and wiggle my fingers- but I haven't been "attacked" yet. The golden hen will sometimes peck at my fingers but it doesn't hurt. Kristi

is it a coturnix cause I have heard buttons do this thing that sounds like white noise.......the first time I heard it I was reading a book to my daughter, and it was all queit I heard it, and it scared the dickens outta me! it kinda sounded like the radio was on but only on a staticy chanel...does that make sense? anyway I think it could be just a wierd freak thing that happens some times!
