Every morning I go to feed the chickens and check for eggs. There is a fan blowing in the coop so the mosquitoes aren't so bad in there but the nest boxes don't get any of the direct wind. So every morning I would open the nest boxes to be swarmed by at least 10 to 20 mosquitoes.

I searched the web and asked on here for solutions but nothing really worked (can't spend a lot of money for some ideas).

Then one day my hubby asked if I could "paint" citronella oil on the walls. Well the oil itself (the kind you put in torches) was too flammable and strong for safety concerns. Then he said what about a candle to rub around on the wood.

So we went to Walmart and got one of those candles in a bucket, Cutter's brand, for just $1.00. Took it home and with a few whacks of a hammer, broke off half of it. Then I took it and rubbed the inside of the nest boxes (tops and sides - not the bottom). Made sure there were no crumbles left behind that the chickens would eat and then waited. The next morning I went out and BAM no mosquitoes in the boxes and it smelled good too.

I'm on day 3 now after rubbing and still no mosquitoes. The chickens are fine and don't seem to care about the smell.

Good idea. That wax rub should last a while longer than just spray or oil drops.
