OMG Mites on Silkies

I didnt find offense.

Well, I sprayed the 2 roosters down. I will get the rest tonight when its dark, and then I will dust the coop with Sevin tomorrow, when I get it.

I dusted the coop with DE now, as that is all I have. I put some DE where they are dust bathing.

ETA: I was reading on Mites and it says they suck blood, but these are on the hair folicle, so I think it is chicken lice.

Permethrin has been tested safe on chickens, but not other forms of poultry. It is great for fly control also in your chicken yard, but I found out the hard way it is not safe around young ducks. I highly recommend it as an insecticide, and is also labeled for use on most vegetables. Again, follow label recommendations and you are fine. remember also that "poultry" on a label does not mean includes ducks and geese, it usually refers to chickens only.

No offense taken.
Just noting that DE is very useful as a natural alternative. And just noting that a lot of the other things might be considered safe, but safe is a term that has to be interpreted. For instance, a lot of OTC medications are considered safe, but I wouldn't take it or give it to my children, because their are risks it has as well.
If you have a mite/lice problem that has been undetected for some time DE will take a few applications. And you can put DE under their wings, just don't "dust" their whole body with it. And you should dust the coop - top, walls, sides, and floors - with a good heavy coating.
We have never had a problem with mites/lice for more than a week or two using DE, and we've been doing this for 8 years now.
Mites are becoming resistant to the permethrin, like bacterias are becoming resistant to antibiotics. Just something to consider.

I did read about the lice becoming resistant to permethrin, but that stuff wiped them right out. I also read that lice spend their entire life cycle on the host. I only had one silkie with them, so I hope this holds true for yours

Yup its lice.

I will be picking up Sevin dust tomorrow. Then Im going to clean out their bedding, dust the coop with Sevin, and lay down fresh pine shavings and dust the shavings. Ill do that in the morning, so it airs out by night. Then at night I will dust the birds.
