OMG!!! PLEASE HELP!! EMERGENCY!! Iodine in baby goats eye

Quote:
I called 4 or 5.. none of them will tell me what I can do, finally found one for farm animals and was told to bring him in, but my truck's not starting cause it's too wet out.. got water in fuel I think, or wet wires. I feel so terrible right now and feel so bad for my baby. I didn't want to hurt him.

He's not acting like he's in pain, but really freaks out when I try to flush again. The cloudiness seems to have gotten a little clearer, but his eye is a bit swollen and half shut

I just connected the NH and wetness thing, have you tried Sagamore Animal Hospital? Mike Schafer deals with large animals and he might be able to give phone advice. I know Wadleigh Falls sees goats, they're probably the ones you've contacted already though. There's the 24 Hour Emergency Clinic in Newington, I'm not sure how they are about phone advice but if you end up finding a working car they will see anything that can get through the doors. Good luck with your goat!!

let em freak out, tie him down and force him to allow you rinse his eye. Isn't there a farm-horse vet that will come out to your home?

The Deerfield Vet will do farm calls, though I've never worked with them. Mike Schafer from Sagamore Animal Hospital will do farm calls, but I think he only goes out once a week, not sure?

There isn't much you or a vet can do but rinse the eye really well and wait. Tie him, flip him on the ground, sit on him, and rinse it well. It's the only way you are going to potentially save that eye. Straight iodine will melt an eye. Old cattle farmers will use it on meat cattle that get an infected eye. They don't care too much if they go blind. My horse vet has known a few people who took the advice of old cattle farmers and completely destroyed their horse's eye.

I don't think i could EVER intentionally burn or mealt an animals eye, people that do that are just not right.

I hope your baby will be okay, just really keep trying to flush it out. Like others said, hog tie him and sit on him if you have to. hopefully it clears up and he's still able to see out of it.

I would like to see the facts on this. I googled it can't seem to find anything where cattle farmers used in on cattle and didn't care that they went blind. Cattle are in many cases the farmers lively hood, i really find it hard believe that they would destroy their source of income. Just curious to see some information on this.

I think Akane was saying that it was to the cattle that were going to be butchered, that's why they didn't mind the blind cow (Not that I'm saying it's right). Also I doubt this is practiced anymore, like Akane said, it's the Old-time farmers, that were probably a little rough around the edges.

after reading i see it differently. sorry, if i jumped -- cattle are my families livelyhood and we treat them with so much care. i am having a bad day and hearing a negative about how people treat cattle and any other animal just kind of made me a little upset. I just hope the goat is okay, something tells me that time will heal and the owners did the best they could for it.
