There is a landscaper that is just down the road from my house so I stopped by on the way home today. I've been meaning to ask them for all their clippings (assuming they are chemical free). While I was waiting for one of the guys to get me the number of the owner, I started looking at a set up they had with planters in it. Large 4-6" PVC pipe with cut-outs that help 4" plant pots. The long stretches of PVC were angled at about 30 degrees and there were progressive pipes going downward, like the old mousetrap game where the ball rolled down the pipes.
As I was looking and admiring the healthy looking plants, I heard gurgling....I stepped closer, and this was a hydroponic set up! They had a copper or brass fixture with another hose that fed the water to the top portion of the PVC and gravity let it back down to the rest of the cascading pipes! AMAZING!!!!!! I was so tickled when I saw that I immediately gave Dan a honey-do!!!
I can't afford it right now, but my long term goal is to get another grey water system set up for the orchard trees and and I think I will just have to incorporate something along those lines to do real-round gardening. I just picked up the latest Mother Earth New and I'll be darned if there wasn't a self-sufficient 1 acre home article....Not getting a cow but I think we are going to start incorporating a lot of those ideas...and this hydroponic idea, too!
