On coyote watch tonight

Something killed 4 of my geese last night and 1 chicken. I didn't hera a thing. The heads were crushed & throats punctured. I'm guessing domestic dog since none of the carcasses were eaten. But, yeah, I'm on watch.

I only use the 20 ga after dark, though.

Good point! My dogs (Shar-Pei, Husky & 2 Lab-Mixes)periodically raise cane though. I don't think anything could sneak up on my place. Haven't lost a chicken to predators since getting the dogs.

Plenty of wildlife out last night, not a peep out of the coyotes.

I parked myself out in the backyard in a lawn chair covered with an old army blanket to wait for coyote.

Saw 4 rabbits, 1 deer and 1 cat, all just after dusk, and then nothing for hours.

Then I hear rustling in the leaves about 20 feet in front of me. I raise my rifle slowly and switch on my flashlight to light the critter up... and hear it running through the leaves... then I hear its claws as it is climbing a tree!

This is what I saw.

Guess the coyotes moved back towards the other end of their range.

That's not what I was told, Mr Possum Breeder Denier-Man.

I "took-out" a possum on my porch eating the cat food 3 nights ago. I was wondering if losing the geese was karma catching up to me.

I kinda hate to bring this up Rooster Red but of course they didn't come up. They could smell you and they could see you. And if they did come up they were behind you checking out the "new thing" in the yard.

Its no problem that you brought this up, your point is well taken.

I made no real efforts to conceal myself, wasn't concealed when I was within rock throwing distance of the one I saw the other night which wasn't spooked by my being there.
This wasn't an all out hunt or I would have de-scented, in camo and not sitting in a chair. This was to observe them to see if they were bold enough to come close to the house and coops to ascess how big the threat might be and if I need to go on an all out hunt, since I know where they gather now.

Where I live is right off the end of a neighborhood, so I'm pretty sure they are used to being around human smells.

Even had one deer come into the yard when I was out there.

Have to suspend things for now, DW is having surgery in the A.M., and I'll be taking care of her for at least a few days depending on the outcome, but thanks.
