Help! Last week, one 2 year old rhode island red died in the laying box, no signs of illness that I noticed, but she was in laying box w/ no egg so I assumed egg got stuck. Now 2nd rhode island red is sick. Have two other chickens, buff orpingtons, who both look totally healthy, but my remaining rhode island red is barely walking, no limping, just sloooow moving, and when I felt up to see if egg was stuck, I didn't feel anything but she was incredibly HOT. Comb is droopy. I just put her back in coop w/ water and scrambled eggs - any other advice?? They are in same chicken run they've been in for 2 years, no idea what they could have eaten or been exposed to, and i have been gardening a bit (they sometimes go in the yard) but no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Could anything natural be to blame?

I am so sorry. I don't know what could have happened. Is there a vet around you could take her to? I'm pretty new to chickens. May someone else here could offer some advice. Good luck. Keep us posted on your other hens progress.

Thanks for the kind words. The largest chicken seller around here told me there's no vet in our area that knows chickens, and said that at $15 to replace, it's not really worth it. But of course, I feel terrible that she is suffering, and want to know what's going on w/ my poor girls!

You can give Sulment medication a try. Just separate and give the medication to the sick one only.
