One Breed/Color Only Flock Owners!!!!

I keep only Black Australorps. I just love the green sheen they give off when the sun light hits their feathers just right. Gorgeous!

I nearly have an all Araucana flock. My only others are a few turkeys, two BCM pullets, and one australorp pullet. But there is so much variety in the Araucanas that they don't look the same! I plan on breeding 'em, since my only cockerels are Araucanas.

Funny, I prefer a little color variation in my flock. If I were to have just one breed (my ultimate dream/goal), I think it would be one of those like Ameraucanas or Icelandics, that have a natural variation of coloring accepted in the standard. I like livestock breeds in general that aren't completely homogeneous in appearance... like Nigerian Dwarf goats, pied Muscovy ducks, etc.

When I was a kid we had all kinds of chickens. When I got chickens two years ago, I got all RIR's This year I expanded to a Buff Orpington hen, an americana hen, two SLW hens along with a few more RIR hens. I like the variety.

I have 5 different flocks housed seperately.

one flock is of partridge rocks, one is of buff rocks, one of silver penciled rocks, and another of exchequer leghorns. its nice when i rotate days for them to range and see them all in the yard.

but then i have my mixed flock of black cochin bantams, RIRs, cuckoo marans. thats also cool to watch! i think if i ever downsize to just one flock for egg eating i would have a hen of every color!

BlazeJester - Ill have to google how far away in SC you are from me, Im right over into the NC line. maybe someday I can hook you up with all different rocks!!

Can't help you on the photo of a single breed. Our flock is a veritable mess; 5 chickens of 5 different breeds (because there are so many good ones that we couldn't decide!).

We chose the breeds we have now, though, for a number of reasons: calm/docile temperaments, cold hearty, easy to care for (because this is our very first flock), and because my DH and I thought they were pretty

. Also because, of the breeds we narrowed our list down to when trying to decide, we only wanted to have 5 chickens. These were the five that we could actually find/purchase as day-old chicks all at the same time.

Would love to get my hands on a spangled orloff, houdan, amerucauna, auraucana, and/or a faverolles.

I've had a flock of all white leghorns and a flock of all Faverolles. My other flocks were mixed, with a lot of different heavy weight breeds. I tend to favor the mellower temperaments, as well as the winter hardy.

Usually I have at least 4 of any one breed and they often hang around together as little sub-flocks, within the larger flock. As an example, I've looked out and seen just the Faverolles or just the partridge rocks foraging in a particular area. They were all brooded together and lived in the same coop.
