One day old poult questions

We put ours out when the boys gobbled...until then, they were in the garage. Go to Chick N Stuff and I made an album of our Turkeys with dates. Kinda kewl to see as they grew.

Turkey poults are very fragile compared to chickens and with the nights getting cooler, a poult can get a chill and die easier. They need to be kept warm until at least 6 to 8 weeks and then acclimated to outside temperatures, but also protected from drafts, getting wet, and any severe drop from daytime to night time temps. When you do put them out, do it during the day when temperatures are rising and watch. If they huddle together, they are too cold. They will probably need a heat lamp, this time of year, unless they are about 3 months old.

If your poult is only a few days old, you have a long way to go yet, before even thinking about putting her outside. You might want to read Turkeys 101, posted by KuntryGirl a few weeks ago. She went into a lot of do's and don'ts that you might find helpful.

I live in Australia so we are in Summer right now. It is pretty hot during the day and cool at nights but definitely not cold. I figured I would have to wait a little while but not sure how many weeks. I only have the one.

I'm in Oz too. We have two out of 17 hatched this morning. I had 3 week olds outside and they all survived. They were in a box with 3 sides and roof enclosed just off the ground. A goanna had a look at them a few times, though just moved on. That was last march. I think i'll keep these inside for a month due to the excessive heat out side at times and more constant temp in side our mud brick house. Plus the kids love to be near them so they can sing to them??? Bad year for snakes so far down south coast NSW, so small wire on their enclosure would be a good idea.

I'd wait til it's about the same size as your hens. They'll still be some squabbles but it should work out.
