Hi all, my name is Marcy. My husband, kids and I are now a retired military family settled in Glendale AZ! I am not new to chickens by any means, when I was 6/7 my sister did a chicken egg project for science and we became the neighborhood zoo (at the time we had mice, hamsters, fish, cats/dogs, guinea pigs, and a pet skunk!). Now 30 years later we have taken over my childhood home and kept the zoo open. Currently we only have 6 chickens, but with science fairs right around the corner we are expecting at the very least 1 dozen newbies. This afternoon we were out starting to rebuild the ladies coop when our son brought a wet bird he just fished out of the pool to us. I thought right a way it was a baby chick, but my husband swears it's not...can anyone settle this?

A baby chick would have fuzzy down not feathers like that.

The feathers on this bird are adult but ragged from maybe molting, or mite damage. Also looks to have a sore on her back - which can happen when overbred by roosters. It doesn't strike me as being a chicken . If she is, she's a mixed breed or some breed I've never seen before.

How big is she in comparison to some common item like a gallon of milk, or loaf of bread? It's hard to judge if she is tiny or not.

You could post her photo on "what breed or gender is this."

Welcome to BYC!

Looks like a Coturnix Quail to me. When you get it completely dried off, repost a pic and I will be able to tell you if this is 100% correct.

Good luck with this little bird and welcome to our flock!
