Brcause I am thinking of getting or keeping a few pairs of each quail and turkeys.

For a small number of quail a rabbit hutch works perfect! keeps them clean and just the right hight to collect the eggs... Or I have a few pair in my house in an old large fish tank... (They are spoiled)

Don't have a clue about how to house a Turkey (I'm not getting those until spring)

My turkeys roosted right alongside the hens. However, the roost does have to be far enough from the wall to allow room for their tails. Oh, and the higher the roost the better.

If I leave them out, they roost in an oak tree next to the coop and then want back into the run the next morning.

Keep in mind that the breed of turkey makes a difference... mine are Rio Grandes, which can fly. Heavy-breasted birds may be happier roosting in boxes on the floor or on top of hay bales stacked 1 deep.

For turkeys we make the roost at all one level about 2 foot off the ground, for chickens ours are tiered up to from 1 foot to about 4 foot. the turkey doors are also larger, for chickens I make them about 16 x 16 inches, for turkeys I make them 24 x 24. But the turkeys have been know to go in the chicken doors ok.

For turkeys we use trough type feeder that is home made and is twice as wide as a chicken trough feeder. It's a lot easier for them to get feed that way. The turkey needs about 2 to 3 times the floor space as chickens, everything else is about the same.

We have seperate coops and flyways for the turkeys and chickens since they require different feed. But about every 2nd or 3rd day they free range together for a couple of hours.

Tom, can I ask what kind of space works for you for your turkeys. I'm contemplating them for next year or the following year -- probably one of the smaller heritage breeds on the theory that it'd cost less in feed to carry a male and a few females over the winter and I don't NEED a 25 lb turkey in the oven ANYHOW -- but having trouble getting an idea of space requirements. They would not be outdoors much if at all during our winters...

Whatever you use for your quail consider an aviary of some kind around their actual cage. I have had a real problem with snakes and coons getting my quail in a cage standing alone outside. Had a 4 foot rat snake slither in a 1/2 by 1 inch wire. And the coons love to hang on the side of the cage and grab one through the wire. I am having a 12 X 12 aviary built right now to house my cages. Also for the other fact as my kids and I both have had quail fly up and at us while feeding and out of the pen. This way we won't be chasing them all over the yard! LOL
