last night a storm rolled in and we lost power from 9:30pm til 10 am this morning. the problem was i had a incubator with about 70 call duck babies that had just started to peck. after reporting the outage and waiting i gave it 2 hrs. and the temp was down to 80 degrees so i had to do something. we have a middle bathroom so i took a buddy heater which some people use them in their tents when camping or in their deer stands when hunting, turned it on. then i filled up the bath tub with what hot water we had. i opened the door on the incubator and keep and eye on the temp. i got it up to were it was varying from 96 to 101 on the temp gauge on the incubator. i checked the temp. once or twice an hour and adjusted the temp as i thought needed. i guess with the hot water and the temp. when i walked in there my glasses would fog up so i know i had pretty good humidity in there.
about 5 i fell asleep. woke up alittle after 7 and my heater had ran out of propaine. it was 90 degrees in the incubator. a friend brought a generator over and we hooked it up to the incubator. ive had a few babies hatched since. i guess my questions is am i going to have any problem or is there anything i need to watch out for.
me being new to hatching these thing i bought about 6-7 other dozen call duck eggs from some really rep. breeders, and they have been in there with these about 10 days some alittle longer.
i know i shouldnt have put them in or bought other eggs til those had hatched but i just had to try. the neighbor that gave me the gqf incubator said he did it all the time with regular ducks and had no problems but he didnt hatch call ducklings either. did i do the right thing trying to keep them warm or should i have loaded everything up and found some electricity else where. we had over 6000 people out of electricity last night. live and you learn. its a waiting game now. thanks tim
