one Large Pen

As my hatching date approaches I seem to have more and more questions. LOL

I was thinking about building a couple of pens (2X3) or (2X4) How many coturnix can I safely store in each? Would it be a problem if I have more than one male in a pen?

Also for next spring I am hoping to house my quail in an existing pen we have on the farm . We used it as a corn crib, then converted it to house chickens. It does not have any enclosures and is 15'L X 4'W X 6' H. It has 1/2" hardware cloth for the walls and floor. I am hoping to house around 30 qual in that pen. Again does it matter if there is a mixture of males and females?

We were getting eggs from 3 out of 4 pens and sporadically getting a egg out of a fourth. Finally looked closer nd we had 2 males and 2 females. The extra male went into the supper pen and that breeding pen started laying almost immediately.
It seems the females were too stressed to lay with more then one male.

I am not really worried about egg production. I am more concerned with the quail fighting.

I have 12 to 14 in each 2 X3 pen and I have no problems

I currently do 2x4 pens with the ability to subdivide into 2-2x2 pens. Light load on a 2x2 is 4 birds, Optimal. Heavy load is 6-8.

It is okay to have more than one male in each pen, provided there are at least 4 females per male, and they all get along. A 2x3 cage would hold 6 birds (going by the 2 sq. ft. per bird recommendation), but would probably house 8-10 very comfortably. I have one cage that is 2 1/2 x 3, and I had 12 birds in there at one time, no fighting. There were 2 males and 10 females. I eventually had to remove a few females cause the other females were picking on them.
Then the 2x4 pen would be okay for 8, if going by the recommended 1 sq. ft. rule, but would probably be fine for at least 12 birds, probably more like 15. Coturnix are normally very easy-going, and get along with each other well for the most part. Again, just be sure there are at least 4 females per male and you should be fine.

yes but you had two females to two males.​
