Last night we candled our 8, 8 day old eggs. You can see large air pockets, plus a little dark moving thing so yay! They're alive. I've read and re-read many of the 'how to hatch' articles here and I do have one question...if, as one article states, many deaths are caused by too much water in the egg to where the chick drowns after internal pipping because the air sac is too small, then why does the information say to increase the humidity during lockdown?

You need to increase the humidity at lockdown to prevent the membrane from shrink wrapping around the chick after it externally pips, or breaks the shell of the egg. If the humidity is too low at this point, the membrane will trap it in the egg and it will not be able to hatch.

Thank you very much!
