First time chicken owners...and we are almost through our first winter together. That being said, one of our silkies decided to go broody. We weren't sure what to do. In a panic, we decided to let her sit on some. So we marked 6 eggs, put them in her favorite box, and let her sit on them. Why not, right? We did this with cockatiels and successfully hatched 9 of them. How hard can chickens be?
20 minutes into her sitting on her 6 eggs, she gets pig-piled by the other dozen girls. Apparently her favorite box, is everyone else's favorite box as well. Now we gotta think where to put her. Its to cold in the garage. If I bring her in the house...my shih tzu's are going to make her miserable. So we whipped up a small boxed in area in her coop and gave her her own little corner.
Other than making her corner nice and comfy, and food and water...I have had zero interaction with her. I haven't candled anything. But all the eggs we eat are fertile(I think)...so keeping my fingers crossed.
2 weeks in, and she's still holdin' strong. 7 days to go and hopefully we got a few chicks runnin' around.
