I currently have 4 pullets who have not quite reached laying age yet. We have them in one coop and that coop has one nest box attached. Im wondering if I should invest in a second nest box or if that will be enough? They free range during the days so I could do a free standing nest box of sorts if that would be better.

We have lots of natural ivy in the backyard and Im dreading the idea of having to hunt through it for potential egg hiding spots.

A second nest box is probably a good idea, but even with that, all will probably want to use the same nest. They tend to be like that. They may very likely try to start hidden nests.

Defiantly add another nest so there is less chance of a war.

A kitty litter covered box situated in a corner makes a great nest box. If at some time in the future you want to raise chicks with a broody hen, the box and hen can be moved to a secluded area, and in 21 days more chickens.

That's a good idea! We also have a small dog carrier that can have it's door removed. I was thinking this could work for a temp box. But the covered kitty box sounds like it would be more protected

Agrees a second box could be beneficial....you can keep a couple fake eggs or golf balls in both nests, might help spread the love so they don't all pine and fight over the same nest.

I would go with two, just to be on the safe side. However, I have 9 hens and 4 nest boxes, and they all bicker over 2 of them and leave the others empty so you just never know.
