I start my brooder pens at 98, then I reduce it 10 degrees each week until it's down to 70 and leave it there. This is in the hot side of the brooder. Could be too warm for them. The chicks are a week old and one of them not the chirping one is 2 weeks old. 95 on the hot side and 92 on the cool side. The crop looks a little swollen also. My friend thinks it’s the wood chips. I usually by full grown hens. This is the first time I’ve had chicks in my house
I don't what your set up is but... the last time I had chicks I had a large tub about 2/3rds the size of a horse troff. I put the heat light at the top on one end. Covered the majority but left about 20% on the opposite end. They would move back and forth from the warm to little cooler side as it suited them. Hope this helps. One of my 6 chicks is chirping loudly and breathing heavy. I pushed the heat source back a little and it seems slightly better since 4 AM this morning when it seemed to be over heated. All the others seem to be content running to and fro. It doesn’t have pasty butt. I just checked and it’s clear
After reading all the stuff about the light the heat, I noticed the momma hen with three chicks in 8 degree weather. They would stay under momma in the nest. Then they come out for a while and eat, then back under. Kinda like humans, their have their own sense of hot and cold and how they feel and adjust. One of my 6 chicks is chirping loudly and breathing heavy. I adjusted the heat lamp again and the temp is now 92 on the hot side. Also the chick finally stopped chirping and I found a little poop on it’s backside so I gently cleaned it with warm water, dried it and put a little olive oil around the vent.I’ll try wetting the feed
Sounds like it was just hot. Must be a girl.I adjusted the heat lamp again and the temp is now 92 on the hot side. Also the chick finally stopped chirping and I found a little poop on it’s backside so I gently cleaned it with warm water, dried it and put a little olive oil around the vent.
