One of my chickens vocalizes in its sleep.

One evening about 2 a.m. a month ago, I was awaken by one of my newer hens (8 months old) clucking her "egg song" quite loudly. But she was perched up in the pine tree and she was not laying an egg. Then last night, again at 2 a.m. the same hen (I believe) started wailing the tragic "I'm being carried away" vocalization. I woke up and went running out, thinking she was being attacked by something, but there was no predator in evidence--just a lot of hens looking around.

I am guessing the hen (or hens) are dreaming and "sleep talking". Has anyone had similar experiences?

OK I know the vocalization you call "growling". I call it muttering. I think the emotion is disappointment, I hear it when they realize I am bringing them "layers crumbles" instead of leftover rice or bread for feeding time.

one of my hens went broody and this is her growl

she growls as soon as she sees me haha

Lol. I don't sleep close enough to my chickens to know their night sounds, or even if they make any. If they do make a ruckus, the dog alerts me. The only time I have ever heard anything I would call a growl is when I reach under a broody to remove eggs, but they do have a happy noise somewhat like a growl that I call a purr, when they are out scratching for bugs and socializing.
