Got an almost 1 day old chick and it is mainly sitting on its bum. Haven't had many chicks so this is new to us. Our chickens are bantams. Hen had 8 chicks and this one is a little different. Took it inside and put in a box wrapped up in an old woollen sock as not got a proper heating lamp, using a normal lamp instead and got box sitting on a hot water bottle to keep it warm. It is drinking and eating a little, but keeps falling back on its bum when walking. Should I be concerned and what can I do?

This could be a vitamin defiencey . You can try giving vitamin b1 which is also known as thiamin. This type of vitamin defiencey causes the chick to sit on hocks. They can also point their head up ways and do what's called star gazing. They may also loose their appetite. However chicks given a oral
thiamin supplement can recover. I would start the
supplement as soon as possible. This brooding
defiencey usually shows up around two weeks old or
so but can appear before that. You can try the
thiamin and see if it helps. If it is a thiamin defiency
then it should help her out. Its worth a try. I do know
that hock sitting for chicks can be related to that
type of defiency and its quite common. You can give
it a try. I really hope this helps her out!!! I would give
it a try. Best wishes and I hope this helps you. This is a one possibility of what might be happening with her.
