Totally possible. My grandmother slowly went through all of her fake eggs, because one by one they would get eaten by snakes. I felt sorry for the snakes (I imagine that can't be a pleasant way to go), but it is also nice that that means the snake wont be back.
I agree - it was probably a snake. A month ago I had 8 hens and was getting, at best, 4 eggs a day. Certainly never more than that, which was highly disappointing considering it is late Spring here, nice a warm - perfect egg-laying conditions. Then we found the brown snake in the corner of the coop behind the nest boxes..... He has since been humanely escorted from the property, and all of a sudden - 7 eggs in one day! Good thing I am not one for culling out unproductive hens! - Krista
