One of my new layers layed a tiny,tiny egg. With a picture.

Does this just mean she is figuring it out? How common is this for a first time layer? Also is it safe to eat? I'd love to make a miniature fried egg!

It's not unusual for new layers to lay a tiny egg. Out of my 20 hens, I've only ever gotten one

Cute little thing! They are safe to eat, but it very likely will have no yolk.

Yup- totally normal for new layers. They will be all different sizes for the first little while. Some will be ittybitty eggs and then sometime you'll get the jumbo double yokers that you would think would have killed the poor girl as it came out

They'll stabilize in a bit.

I assume these are young pullets just starting to lay right?

Yes they are just starting to lay. Here is a pic of the egg next to a quarter and a couple EEs.

A farmer friend told me they used to call them "luck" eggs. I thought that was sweet. I've only had one- and I saved it!

I recently had one of my girls lay this egg in the shape of a in shell pecan!! Color and all! Whats with that??

I had a little egg too from one of my new layers. I think it is too cute! It did not have a yoke inside. I wish i would have blown it out and saved it. If I get anymore i will blow it out and save it.

They're also called "wind" or "fart" eggs, as if the hen had passed gas and popped out a wee egg by accident.
