My girls do that all the time. I've never had a roo long enough to have him do that.
How old is he?
It's awesome , isn't it?

One of ours (hen though) has started to do that when I am handing out treats. Scared the crap out of me the first time. I thought it was so cool, but those claws are kind of sharp!

I had my roo do that a couple times.
I miss my roo, he was my fav chicken. He
always came and sat in my lap in the evening.
Sorry I had to let him go but we decided we only wanted hens.

It freaked me out, I thought he was going to go after my head and do his thing or try to do it to the hen in my arms????

I'm guessing that he is trying to show you that he's YOUR rooster - in a dominance kind of way. I wouldn't let him do that anymore; it could turn ugly.

Was he acting in an aggressive manner?

My lavender ameraucana pullet flew clean across the yard and landed on my shoulder at feeding time this morning. It sure was startling, and I did not mind it one bit! However, if one of my roosters did that (in a protective manner I would imagine) it would raise a flag of concern. That is not behavior I would allow from a rooster...especially while I was holding one of his girls. I'm curious...how did you react?

Do not encourage this behavior. Inadvertantly or on purposely a roosters toenails or spurs can cause significant damage. Such injuries frequently become infected- just think about what chickens walk around in. Sometimes we make such pets of our poultry and in removing all boundaries create a dangerous situation especially for children.

+1

I don't even encourage chicks to jump up onto me b/c they will continue to do it as adults, which can be not only risky if they nail you when you're not looking, but just nasty if they take flight onto your head or shoulder right after standing in a pile of cecal poo.

I knocked him off fast with a sling of my arm. I get the feeling he wanted the chicken no matter where she was because he was half on my head and shoulder still flapping.
