I am at work now and my girlfriend called to say that she was checking on the girls and she found one of them dead in the run.
It's definitely a sad moment.

I have to try and figure out what happened to her to make sure it doesn't happen to the rest of the 4 girls.

I have to figure out whether she was attacked by something, or died for some other reason. She was less than 1 year old.
If she didn't die from an attack I need to figure out if she was diseased and whether the eggs are safe to eat.

It's been very cold and so the door on the run had a hard time latching. It would close but not lock.
There is a chance that something might have gotten into the run through the door. Slim, but there's a chance.
There is wire surrounding all sides of the run, burried 6-12 inches deep (and the ground is frozen). The top also has wire on it.

Can you guys tell what happened to Princess?
My mother loved these birds, especially the white silkies. She is going to be very upset.

My girls were on a steady diet of Green Mountain organic layer. Supplemented with corn (mixed in) and occasionally lettuce as treats. They had plenty of water in a heated waterer and I recently put in a heater into the coop to make sure they were warm enough.

Maybe she froze to death if she was caught outside last night?

Oh...maybe that is snow? It just looks like foam to this Florida girl!

Yes, if she was outside with no protection and no way to huddle with anyone and it was very cold, she could have frozen to death.

With what information is provided, I would say she froze to death. They really aren't the hardiest of birds in extreme temperatures. I'm sorry for your loss

Yes that is snow.
My automatic door closes at 6pm every day. Perhaps she got stuck outside.
I just left work early to get home. I cant see any injuries from the pics.

This is so sad...and a horrible way to die.

I agree. This is the reason I will never have an automatic door. I would be scared to death of my girls being caught outside. Can you extend the time a bit to allow you more time to make sure they are inside? Just a suggestion I've seen on other threads.

I just had one die from pileing. They literally all squashed into the space behind a feed tub and the one all the way at the back got squashed. Her head and neck were in the same position....that's why I mention it. Any chance they all pile up to sleep?

Sorry about your baby
