Hello. I'm glad you are here! We had three female quail. When we were out of the state for a few days their water dispenser broke inside and our helpers thought they still had water but they didn't. One died and the other two were weak when we returned, but they are eating, drinking and moving around normally now that we added a new water dispenser.
After about three weeks we just noticed that one little girl has an eye that looks like maybe it was injured. We have never raised quail before, but it does not seem to be infected, just damaged and may be partially healed.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Especially about an over-the-counter solution we could put in their water to make sure it does not get infected.
Thanks soooo much!

I would definitely start with the saline rinse. It looks like the eye is crusted over, so I'm not sure if it's mites, infection, or injury. You'll be able to get a better look and perhaps a better picture after you've rinsed the eye.

I've seen a few eyes like that before, normally from fights with other quail. I would recommend just leaving it for a while, as they normally get better by themselves. After maybe a week, the eye should open. If it gets worse or doesn't open, speak to a specialist or vet. Good luck, I hope she gets well soon! ❤️

Great observations. Appreciate you a lot!

OK, we rinsed her eye with saline solution three times. My husband held her and I used the dropper and took photos. She seemed to know we were trying to help her. After what looked like a startle reaction to the first drop, she was quiet. My husband could see her eye get more and more open. I can't tell that from these photos. Thanks so much for reviewing and advising, and do let me know if there's anything more we need to do, including take better pictures!

Got a better photo today. We gave her more saline solution today. She was really mellow about it. For sure she can see. She was looking around at things. Thanks!!

Looks like it was injury, then. The saline will help keep it clean and heal faster. It probably feels good to have any irritants rinsed from the eye.
