One of the Royals left a little surprise in the nest

Same thoughts have passed thru my mind. Just think, the chicks were free! The coop was free, the feeders were free, then came the renovations and improvements. Let's see $500 divided by .21 is, well a lot more eggs!
Chickens are sneaky and very high maintenance IMO. There is no way you could have convinced me that they were going to be so much time, work and money. I thought because I was fairly handy, outdoorsy and a bit of a "Tomboy", had a bunch of other animals that chickens were going to be easy. My horses are easier and now my dogs are getting ignored. But, I do love my girls. :th

I'd have to agree. They are fun but you can't take a chicken on a trail ride!

Well not cheaper in Vermont where you can only graze part of the year. Chicks don't enjoy a living quarter horse trailer and camping but I'm enjoying them. No egg today! But on the good side, my daughter was excited about the egg prospect and she did chores this morning!!!

Just because the egg seemed small doesn't necessarily mean that it came from the smaller hen. My Ameraucana and my Buff Orp have been laying since September and the eggs started out on the small side. It's only recently that they are starting to look like the proper size for their breeds.

I think it was probably a medium sized egg. I suspected the Comet because she is a smaller breed than the others and from what I have read larger breeds make take longer to start laying. Eggs and hens amaze me, labor everyday? Ouch

Our guys do not have a living Quarter Horse trailer. Which by-the-way sounds awesome. That's probably why they are so affordable .
Super cool your daughter is enjoying the chickens!!!
