One of my four month old pullets, a silver laced wyandotte is at the bottom of the pecking order, ands the other six are roosting but she won't go up with them, but there's plenty of room. Even the other wyandotte who is also at the bottom of the order will fly up there with the others, but she wont, is there anything I can do?

is there a mean chicken in the group?if so i would thake him or her out and put her some ware else like a dog cage or a fenced in area close to the others so much so that she or he can see them so she or he wont cluck for some friends!!

good luck with your chickens!!!

You could try picking her up and quietly placing her on the roost with the others when it's dark. She might get the idea of where she is meant to be sleeping after a few nights of that.

Also, I know you said there was plenty of roosting space, but is there enough room for her to flap her wings and physically get herself up there without knocking the others from the perch?

The reason I ask is that I had the same problem with my girls too - Orpingtons and RIR's. They all nested on the ground in a huddle until I put in a lower roost which they could use as a step to get to the higher one.

The first night after I had installed it, I went out to check on them in the dark and they were all snuggled up together on the top roost :) So sweet!

Good points here about access^^^^

They only need about a foot per bird to roost, and sometimes use less, but they need room to shuffle around and get settled. I've read that closer to 2 feet per bird is better.

My girls have a large platform covered in straw to roost on but for some reason, they all sit in one huddle, often on top of each other, in the draughtiest area of the roost!!
Sometimes I just don't understand them...

My EE is at the the top of the pecking order, but she'll only peck at the wyandottes a couple times during the day, and not really at night.

Quote: Yeah I eventually picked her up and put her on a lower roost and went to bed, then when I let them out the next morning they all seemed fine, I'll see what happens tonight.

Yay! It's always nice to see them all together up on the roost.

I always used to feel sad for the one or two left behind on the floor!

Let us know what happens tonight, and if she makes her own way up there....

I definitely will Krista just saw a hawk fly over so I put them in the run, they seemed to sense the danger as well and followed me right in.Put my big bernese mountain dog out there too.

Good news!! I watched them go in and she proceeded to jump on the ladder I made and jumped up with the others. I'm glad I wont have to worry anymore!! :)
