One roo, or two?

Now, who should I keep? My automatic reaction is Roo Beast. He's prettier and has always been a cutie, but he's also very dominant. Pecked me today. Incidents are increasing. I don't have many hens. Val is quieter and not so dominant. Probably the safer choice with young kids even though he doesn't look as impressive. Roo would probably have a better chance of finding a good home with his good looks. Any ideas?

Unless Roo Beast is human aggressive I'd use him. He's the dominant male meaning he's healthier in the animal kingdom. He'll likely settle down once the brother is removed and all cockerels mellow after turning to cock bird and spring hormones settle. I'd not use the brother as wry tail is hereditary and would be automatically partnered with dumplings here. Even though your breeding for utility you don't want major defects in the flock and in breeding for utility you'd choose the heartier bird.

Since you are breeding for utility and not show, if both birds are equally healthy, then choose the best personality as you do not want to breed forward aggression.

I would agree here... Not show? Kids? Egg layers is all you want? I'd keep the gentler one if it were me... I handpicked myvRed Star, have trained him from day one, he's a little bit if a weenie about the BRs, butvhechas PTSD from his tail being yanked out lol ;)

If the dominant us already shown ng aggression, I'd cull him. You don't want a nasty roo on your hands; its not worth it for a few more eggs...

I'm breeding mine with BRs and Anconas; I want eggs too, but I'm more trying to improve a personality defect lol , since my roo is so friendly and the Anconas are in the trees too much, need a happy medium lol :D

Egghead Jr. is right about wry tail. I forgot that fact with the more mellow one. No you don't want to breed forward wry tail. I would choose the other one unless it is human aggressive.

Sad the one has wry tail... no, you don't want to breed that forward... but I also wouldn't breed an aggressive roo either... if he gets worse, then get rid of both and find a new roo... usually people have too many and you can find a mellower roo from someone who has too many... good luck...
