I got 4 pekin ducks and as I suspected I have 2 females and 2 males. We are prepared to rehome a male but I was curious how much of a problem this usually is? Will this make them more likely to try to mate with our chickens? I know that it has potential to be a problem, but was curious if it was one of those things that is usually not as big of a problem as it can be made out to be.

In my experience, it is that big of a problem. It is not exaggerated. They act like angels in the fall. But, when those hormones spike in early spring it turns Dr.Jekylls into Mr.Hydes. I currently have two gentle drakes with six girls and I’m nervous about spring and considering my options.

That's kind of what I figured but thought I would check because I have experienced the other side of that where things are exaggerated and then not a problem at all 😂. I'm hoping I can find someone to take him. 😬

It’s a massive deal. No exaggeration at all. Your 2 girls would be severely overmated, and it will increase the risk of your boys mating your chickens, yes. There is no “potential” to be a problem - it will be a problem. I wish you great luck in rehoming a boy!

Be prepared, you may have to find another girl or 2 even for just the 1 boy.. Drakes are extremely hormonal birds.
