Yes ive read lots about rats and theyll work as teams to kill chicks. You need quarter inch mesh to keep out a rat. So glad youre loving them and pray youll keep and love the roos that youre sure to have. I have 8, 1 1/2 yr old boys snd they are a trip!

Hi! I have 12 boys, most are 2-3 years old. Is NH the granite state? Forgive me if I am incorrect. I am in Washington. You're quite right about the wire mesh. Half inch is adequate for larger rats.

1. I forget, are the chicks inside or out in their coop in a brooder? If the latter, you can start letting them have more space to explore -- going out into the cold area then coming back to their heat as they need to (just make sure there aren't any places where they can be trapped away from heat.

2. Give the save-a-chick in a separate waterer with plain water also available.

3. They don't need everywhere to be warm, just the one spot that acts as an artificial hen.

So glad to know this about the electrolytes. I didn't even offer plain water (baad chick mammma). They have some in there now though. It has been there for several days at this point. But the first week, was all electrolytes.

Looking forward to mine (when I get 'em). Thinking two should do it. I know I can't explain to them to only mate with certain girls so the mash-up outta be interesting. I am thinking I'd like a Buff Orpington boy and a Brahma boy. My girls are Orpingtons and Ameraucanas (for now). Looking to add Sultan, Polish, Dixie Rainbows then I'll be done (evil laugh).
