Hi
I have had backyard hens for about 5 years now. I'm in the city and my neighbour and I sure the duties ... and the eggs.
It has been a positive experience overall. But sometimes we are mystified.

Right now we have 5 hens. Two are Blue Laced Wyandotes. And one of those two (her name is Mango) has not laid an egg for months! They all seem happy. They are all eating, including Mango. They are not moulting. They are not broody. We know what that looks like with our Brahma!

What else could we check or do? I look forward to your comments.
thanks very much
Melanie

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Here is a nice thread that covers pretty much every reason a hen might not be laying. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/423023/why-arent-my-chickens-laying-here-are-your-answers How old is Mango and when was the ast time she was laying? When was last time she molted, some hens will do a gradual molt never really looking bald anywhere (check her over and see if you see pin feathers anywhere) and take months to start laying again. Have you given her a really good thorough exam from head to toe, especially check her abdomen that it doesn't feel mushy or hard, how is her overall body condition.

Welcome to BYC!

Definitely follow that link that Kelsie has provided. Lots of tips as to why she may not be laying. And X2 on the over all exam. Health issues can cause a hen to stop laying.

I hope she starts back up soon. Welcome to our flock!

Thanks! So fast on the reply! I am happy to be part of your flock.
I will indeed try to do a thorough exam of Mango - once my chicken partner gets home to help.

She hasn’t laid and egg since at least October, maybe even September.

Our days are getting longer and longer – and she’s the only one not laying

She hasn’t molted anywhere that I can see.
She is not broody (we’ve had experience with this).
The flock seems healthy enough and they are all laying except her.
She is the same age as her sister, about 2 years old.
She looks big and healthy. In fact looks better than her sister who IS laying. I will look her over, but not sure even what to look for. There are no obvious signs that she’s ill.
And stressed? The rest of the flock is happy. She doesn’t appear to be unhappy. And it has been months since her last egg.

I am stumped.

Its a small free range :-)
The back yard of our very tiny city lot.
I have checked ... and you can see everywhere. No where to hide anything.

here she is first thing this morning.
Eating, drinking, socializing with the other hens. Generally a pretty lucky girl! Just no egg production. We checked our calendar and it's no been 8 or 9 months since she last laid an egg.

She sure is a very beautiful chicken. Did you feel her abdomen and see how it compares to her sisters who are laying, does hers feel soft/squishy or is there a hard lump or something in there, anything different ... don't know if you'll be able to figure out what is going on unless you do a necropsy on her if even them. With your luck she damaged her ovary and is going to turn into a sort of rooster.

Thanks! It's fun to be a part of this chicken community :-)
My neighbour, and chicken partner, Nancy and I will check Mango's abdomen at 5:30 this afternoon. I'll report back soon after that.
