I thought some might be interested in seeing this. I kept this cornishx girl back last year to use for a cross breeding project. She just turned a year old and I decided it was time to put her out of her misery. She still seemed quite healthy, but due to her size she had a real hard time getting around. She dressed out at 12 pounds, minus skin and wings and at least 4 pounds of fat. Poor thing was nothing but a huge walking breast.

What did you do to keep her alive and so healthy? Some people don’t think you can raise a Cornish cross pass the butcher age.

I doubt that you can raise most of them to one year of age. She was the smallest most agile pullet of the bunch at butchering time. I kept her on a low protein restricted diet. She also got lots of sprouted mixed grains, which I feed to all of my chickens, seems to keep them nice and healthy. I did have to bathe her underside frequently as she just laid around much of the time and would get quite messy. I have some pullets out of her, bred to my blue Orpington rooster. Three black and one splash pictured at 12 weeks. They are 5 months now and just started laying. Nice girls, I really like them!
