My flock is now 1. Was out of town for a few days, asked the neighbors kid to feed and water my chickens for 2 days. He is not sure he locked the coop last night. Needless to say only 1 survived, found her wedged up under the deck of the house, a good distance from the coop. Though I am upset I paid him - he does feel bad - call me a sucker I feel sorry for him too. Just an innocent mistake.
But my question is - I cannot replace them until next month. Will she be okay for a month until I can get more?? She's a good hen and feel for her being alone, but right now I can't do anything about it that quickly.
Any advice or suggestions. I have thought of trying to find her home.
Thoughts??
Thank you

I think she will be ok until next month, she might just get abit bored. Mebys you could get her a mirror in her run and a peck block and let her have some time out of the coop so she can go have a scratch around to keep herself entertained.

I am so sorry for your losses. My non chicken friends are so unsympathetic to this sort of thing, my heart goes out to you.

I recently lost all but one of my girls to a dog, and to tell you, it was sad. She would walk around the yard ALL day just calling out for the other girls as loud as she could. I asked at the feed store if they had any suggestions, but to no avail. They had a similar situation with one of their groups of hens and said she did the same thing. Unfortunatly after a few days she sucumbed to the same fate. If it hadn't been for the dog, I think she would have died of a broken heart anyway.

We are in the process of finding the dog another home, as she is now a rentless foe.

On a happier note, we have new chicks, and ducks! With a new and improved security system (and one less German Shepherd).

Good luck to your girl!

Hi
Thank you both for your advice. You are right Mama she was crying, I put the mirror in that John recommended and is doing better.
Looks like I might be able to get her at least one friend for now.
Thanks
