Only 4 chickens out of 11 left...

Hawks will land on the prey (like Davaroo writes) and they will often sit on the ground with the prey item in their talons until it dies, and often will eat it (or part of it) before rising up again. They will do this if the item is too large to lift right away.

We're down to 7 now. Our DD let the chickens out this morning and it's been snowing all day. Mama fox decided she needed them more than us. The gate to the garden was left open and the fox got in through the garden fence adjacent to the chicken run. Fox prints everywhere in the snow, lots of feathers and other stuff too.
