i'm sorry to ask you this question with my duck eggs on 18th days but i think if i'm wrong then i could practice the right way to my chicken eggs that now just reach the 4th days. and i'm extremely sorry if you think this question is too easy (not for me) and useless (but useful for me).

i have search this forum for the right position of turning, and i found no one that could be good, so i'm (maybe) repeating to ask the right way to turn, this thread just created only to ask this matter although i have ask it in my other thread.

i include 4 photos that showed 2 eggs from my "village chicken". with description.

first position:

those two eggs at FIRST time placed with small end down and lean to left.

the SECOND time, the eggs were "turned" with still and always till 21st (of course there is no turning on 18-21) days with small end down and lean to the right.

38691_yap_1.jpg

"conclusion, we just "touch" the eggs and make it to lean to opposite side 3 times a day."

second position (the same egg) :

the egg is positioned to end always down and we just left it "sleep" like that. (FIRST time)

38691_yip.jpg

we make a "movement" by "lift" it from "ground of bator" then rotate it so the side that "sleep on floor of bator" now located at the top and the top now "sleep on floor"

38691_yip_1.jpg

"conclusion, we must "lift" it and change the position, the upper now is on lower and the lower is now on upper/top"

now, the question :
1. which one is used by you (thread reader)?
2. is that good (hatching rate)?
3. which one is recommended by you for me to use (with/without reason)?
4. is it safe to change the "way of turning" of my 18th days duck eggs and 4th days chicken eggs in bator? (ex: if i used first position and now after read all comment i change to second position)

this isn't test or examination

, just hope maybe any BYC er volunteered to share their knowledge in turning problem.

i'm sorry can offer nothing to everyone that help me on this thread except the opportunity to see "village chicken" (i'll make this breed with my name later (maybe)

Well, either works, it depends on the space available. In mine they're flat with the sides marked, X on one side O on the other (similar to your photo 3 & 4) since eggs should be turned an odd number of times I turn them 1. when I wake up, 2. when I eat lunch 3. When I to to bed. In nature the hen doesn't being out a compass and protractor to measure exact 180 degree turns, so you're most likely doing fine.

Note: several of us roll the eggs from X to O and back, rather than lift them, less chance of dropping and breaking them.

oh gosh, I do mine the easy way...I place them in a carton, get a stack of books...place one end of the carton up on it....few hrs later as I walk by....gently turn them with that end down and the other up....

thank you 2txmedic and saddina to answering.

ouch

, why did i only get 2 answers? i don't think that there's only 3 people in BYC (include me) hatching their chicken eggs in bator.

please kindly share your experience, as i said that this subject is going to be asked to deletion after i get many enough answer as feedback. thank you for sharing.

My incubator has a turner. I don't have to turn them by hand. I used to use cartons and turn them as shown in your first 2 pictures.

Turning them in a carton would be like you have shown rocking from side to side. If you lay them on thier side in the incubator mark each side with an X and an O. Turn them roll them from the X to the O, next turn would be from O to X and so on. Does that make sense? It's not flipping them around it's gently rolling them from one side to the other and you mark them so you know which side is which. In the carton it's gently rocking them from one side to another, just the way you show. Hope it helps

I do not know where the idea came about that you must turn the egg an odd number of times. I lay my eggs on the side like in your second example. I mark one side with a "+" and the other side with a "-" I start them in the bator at 12 noon with the "+" side up and then roll them to the "-" side at six O'Clock and then back to the "+" side at 12 again. This way whoever is looking at the eggs knows if they have been turned just by looking at the time and what symbol is facing up. this meens that they are turned four times a day and we have had 100% hatch rate two seperate times with this method.

I have been following your other threads and have been very impressed with your strong will too overcome soo many obsticles. I pray that you will be succesful in the end. just know that each person will have there own experiences and find what works best for them may not work best for you. learn from each setback and keep pressing foward.

Best of luck

I dont think its that only 4 people are hatching.

For me, I do the same as one of the other posters so I did not want to fill up the thread with the same things.

Please dont think its that no one wanted to answer. I bet that many people thought the same as I did

Enjoy your hatching!

Hi Mulia

I have an automatic mini incubator which turns my eggs - which are in your "sleeping" horizontal position very hour (seems alot to me!)

Not sure about tilting and rotating but I think you will be fine changing your method now.

I just think that my hen has them in the sleeping/lying down position and I am sure that she doesn't turn them more than 4-6 times per day.

Fingers crossed for a good hatch for you - your dedication to your eggs deserves high praise indeed!
