3 of my 4 immediate neighbors have 6-8 chickens. We got 6, I didn't really give it a 2nd thought. Now I see that the rule is "2 hens, no roosters. kept at least 20' from a dwelling." I'll at least be careful about where I put the coop.

Do most people follow these # rules when it's such a low #? We are at the edge of town, and obviously my neighbors aren't going to complain, but I'm a bit worried about breaking the law and all. Wondering what others experiences have been, especially here in Eugene or other parts of Oregon even.

I'm breaking the law too but I haven't had any problems and I live in town. I have a permit for a certain number but I'm over it (lol I won't say by how much, but it's a lot). I keep the coop and run clean, the smell down, the noise down and I haven't had any problems. I even have a rooster but he stays in at night and goes out during the day only when he doesn't crow (yeah I'm lucky that way!). My neighbors love my chickens and the eggs so it hasn't been a problem, not to mention that 9 neighbors in the area have chickens but no permit.

So I say good luck and don't worry, but stay aware of the situation and on top of it. I figure proactive is always better than reactive

I'm just a few towns north of you and believe I'm a bit over the limit as well. Our town bases the limit on the property size, which I think is a good method, but currently a bit too restrictive. Even though I'm on a nearly half acre I'm limited to only 5 or 6 if I did the math correctly. That means I'm about 5 or 6 over the limit. My chickens and ducks are in a well maintained large grassy area with 10 fruit trees. There is practically no odor and because of the location someone driving by would have no idea they are back there. I could probably have twice my current flock without enlarging their area and still have no problems. I had a rooster up until a couple years ago, but gave him away just to make sure I don't irritate any of the neighbors.
My advice would be keep your property well maintained, your chickens well managed, be a good neighbor and you should be fine being a little over the limit.

I'm glad there are other chicken outlaws around.

I'll have to check with my neighbors and see if they are aware of the number.
2 of the 3 that have them don't even have fenced yards so I know they won't complained about mine that will stay in our yard, and I won't be keeping any roo--don't want to push all the limits here.
