oops, my hens ate medicated chick starter

I was wondering the same thing about eating eggs layed by chickens eating Starter/Finisher.

My 17-18 week old Barred Rock just layed her first egg. We hadn't switched her and her mates to layer food yet because we thought it was too early and wanted to finish the bag they were on.

I don't know how I feel about eating an egg laced with medicine

but I also hate to throw out one of our first eggs (We have 23 week olds just beginning to lay.)

Please don't freak out, and for sure don't waste any of those perfectly good eggs for consumption. The medication in the commercial feed is safe in regards to health issues.

One hears alot of this and alot of that....hearsay, eh?

Extreme folks will talk about a trace of this and a trace of that, and that exactly what it is, a trace that isn't harmful in any way, except being able to detect it.

If you were aware of what the commercial industry fed their birds, I'm sure you would really freak out....but I 'll bet you ate those for years without becoming sick.

Homegrown eggs are the best eggs possible, with more nutrition, and less traces of any kind, compared to the accepted commercial eggs.

Seriously, if it doesn't say anything on the label about not being fit for human consumption, probably not an issue. However, if you are still in doubt you could contact your local farm extension office. They have all kinds of useful info, and at least in my experience, are happy to help! Some even have web sites you can use! If not in your County - check out State listings. The Ohio State University Extension has a great site I've used!
 
This raises a question for me, can you supplementally feed hens with chick starter from time to time to prevent coccidiosis? I had always thought it would be bad for the eggs but if not...
 
My understanding is the medicated part is Amp. We humans use amp all the time for an antibiotic. I give my hens medicated starter when they seem to be feeling under the weather. I have noticed that they perk up because they really like the stuff. I collect the eggs and do not even give it a second thought.
 
Check the label on the bag. Here, there's medicated starter with terramycin. It may not be the same thing available in all areas.

As far as eating commercially produced eggs for years without getting sick, that's debatable. Yes, you can eat them (most people, anyway) without any obvious, immediate illness. But many gradually developed weaknesses and chronic illness are directly related to contaminants in food, consumed over a long period of time. And, if there's a trace of something bad here, and another trace there, and more traces of others toxins in darn near everything you eat, that adds up. And interacts.
