I realize that Opal Legbars are a cross and not an actual breed, so personalities could be very different.

I am considering adding Opals but curious to their personality. Does the leghorn in them make them more skittish? How is their laying versus CCL (high quality stock)?

Thank you

Bud Henry worked on the Isabel Leghorns from crosses of brown Leghorns and Lavender Orpington. Bud said about 6 years into the project that the Isabel Leghorns were less flighty and more calm than brown Leghorns.

So...I wouldn’t be worried about temperament from the Isabel Leghorns. Legbars are 90% Leghorn blood so they Opal variety should be abound the same genetic base as the Gold, Cream, or white varieties.

I would not recommend this breed to anyone trying to have Urban backyard chickens. They are incredibly skittish, terrified of EVERYTHING & super flighty. I regret getting them, EVERY DAY. I debate every day if I should get rid of them. I am hoping when they start laying and mature a bit, they will calm a bit, if they don't I will definitely get rid of them. Yes, they are gorgeous birds, but not for my set up.
