CCMH, I'll let you know the final weights after they chill and I bag them on Saturday. I ordered a batch of 25 last year to split with a friend. We got them the first week of July as day olds from Freedom Ranger Hatchery (PA) and took them to processing at 10 weeks. Of the 12 that I ended with, I had one pullet that weighed 2.56 but most were in the 3-3.5 range and four cockerels that weighed between 4.19 and 4.66 pounds. The weather here last July and August was very hot and I think this kept them from reaching their potential. We had a batch of Cornish X ordered and couldn't give them more time to finish so took them as scheduled. We decided to try them earlier in the spring and see if the cooler weather made a difference. This year, we ordered 50, got 51, from the same place on April 1st. I lost one at four weeks, unknown cause, and my friend lost three to minks. One was a white pullet so she went to live with BYCer SteveH and be part of his Meat Bird project. We took 46 to be processed this morning. These seemed much larger, I'll get weights and let you know how they did.

Good night everyone!

CCMH: Thank you for telling me! Fermented cabbage... I wonder how the inventor of sauerkraut came up with that idea!

I hope you all had a wonderful day!

Today wasn't so good. Mom was having an off day, noise abounded, and I got 5 hours of sleep thanks to a nightmare.

Bleck, no thanks to the goats milk/cheese either. Tastes like sweepings from the goat house floor.

Got my first duck egg yesterday! Looking forward to having it for brekkie today. We are having some nice weather again this week, 70+ degrees with light breezes, the animals are all loving it as much as we are.

I've started the Couch to 5k running programme, still on the first week but I hope I can stick with it. I've had a rough few years health-wise and I really need to take charge of myself and take a bit more care. I don't really enjoy exercising much except for going on long walks but I feel it's not enough so this seems like the logical next level.

good luck with the new incy Sam, if it performs as well as it looks you will be sorted! I have some more eggs in right now too but i am not holding out much hope for them, the temps have been going screwy again. I have worked out that if I don't change the fan out every second hatch then it doesn't keep the temps steady.

Thistle my darlin' girl, I glad to read that you are taking such an interest in improving your health. I'm sure that if you will not only succeed but will surprize yourself at how well you do. You might even find that running as the sun comes up is a wonderful way to start your day.

I've had the incubator running for several days now with out the slightest variation in temperature. I have a digital temperture/hygrometer in it with a glass bulb thermometer as a back up. Yesterday I wanted to mechanical hygrometer as a backup as well and made an interesting discovery. I only had the incubator open for about a minute yet recorded a 4 degree drop in temperature plus a 10% drop in humidity. Since the eggs have only been in for 2 days that wasn't any big deal, but I could see how during the final day that might cause serious problems for hatching chicks.

Opa I am going to have to agree with you on the goatmilk. To me it tastes like a dirty barn smells. After this week I feel like I live in tornado country. That was so scary Wednesday night, tornadoes hit in my area and we had severe thunderstorms with hail. We spent most of the night in the cellar waiting for it to end. We ended up losing a tree, but it was okay because I have been wanting to get rid of that one for a while. During my life tornadoes have not been one of the things I have worried about...maybe hurricanes and freezing weather but not tornadoes.

PK I have to say you're right about the sauerkraut... I wonder who invented it and how they came up with it. Same thing with a lot of food and drinks, makes you wonder what ever made them try it in the first place.
